GianPaolo Maffioletti is recorded as enrolled on the 1969-70 postgraduate programme run by the Architectural Association's (AA) Department of Planning and Urban Design, in London. However, he also appears to have studied within the AA's Department of Development and Tropical Studies, gaining both Tropical and Urbanism postgraduate diplomas in 1970. Prior to attending the AA, GianPaolo had worked in Milan at the BBPR studio. Following his graduation from the AA, he practiced in Ghana, Tanzania and Canada, before returning to Milan and founding the practice, Piani e Progetti Architetti in 1972. His practice was responsible for developing a number of socio-economic and urban plans for the Istituto Lombardo di Studi Economici e Sociali (ISES) and the Istituto Regionale di Ricerca della Lombardia (IRER), working with the economist Carlo Ricciardi. The studio was also involved in a number of significant infrastructure projects, contributed significantly to public projects including the design of community spaces, schools and low-cost housing.
