The theatre was built in 1955 with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to serve as a performance and film venue on campus. It was the first well-equipped modern theatre in Nigeria. In 1962, the building became home to Nigeria’s first formal drama training with the establishment of the School of Drama, and later upgraded to the Department of Theatre Arts.
