
Uno Winblad studied architecture and urban planning Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, before travelling to the UK and enrolling on the 1961-62 postgraduate programme run by the Architectural Association’s Department of Tropical Studies, in London. Upon graduating he developed a career as a consultant specialising in the field of environmental sanitation and health, working across Africa, Asia and the Middle East, consulting for the Swedish International Development Cooperation (SIDA), the Danish International Development Agency (
DANIDA), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Development Research Center, Canada, and various UN organisations. In parallel with his consultancy work, Winblad is an academic and has held posts at the University of Hong Kong (1970) and the University of Kyoto (c2004) and has run training courses in South Africa, Uganda, Bolivia, China and Vietnam. He has published numerous articles and papers on sanitation, and his co-authored book ‘Sanitation without Water’ (1985) is regarded as a seminal text within the field.
