
Universidad Central de Venezuela was founded in 1721 and is the oldest university in Venezuela. Its present campus, on the outskirts of Caracas, was designed in the 1950s by Carlos Raul Villanueva and comprises of over 90 structures, adorned by works from 28 contemporary avant-garde artists. The campus remains one of the most successful, large-scale applications of modernist principals and ideas, in Latin America. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 2000.
