The building was amongst the first buildings to be completed of the university in 1954 and was designed by architects Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew. In 1962, the university became an independent institution, making it the oldest degree-awarding institution in Nigeria. It was a branch of the University of London, which awarded the degrees until 1967.
